ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I wish to express my appreciation to Aunt Mary Dillon, and to Mrs. Spillman
and to all of those who gathered information, saved important papers and letters,
or told me the stories of our family that I have recounted here. I am grateful for the enormous resources in the Library of Congress and
the D.A.R. Library at the National Headquarters in Washington, D.C. I want to
thank Mrs. John Howard Hopkins, my neighbor, who inspired me and let me pore over
her books. I am indebted to Mrs. Wm. S. Morton, a genealogist of Farmville, Va.,
who let me spend two all-too-short days looking through her extensive records on
Prince Edward and surrounding counties. Mrs. Morton has been generous and patient
in corresponding with me and answering the questions which I have fired at her. Mr. H. C. Bradshaw, of Durham, North Carolina, kindly gave me permission to
quote from his book, The History of Prince Edward County, Virginia. My thanks go also to Jill Munson, my friend and temporary secretary who
must have groaned over my illegible scrawls and transposed typing. To Arry, my husband, go my thanks for his encouragement and assistance, and
for putting up with me and my ancestors.
