Will of Patty Morton, daughter of Captain John Morton
Prince Edward County
Will Book 7-369
The will mentions her nephew, W. S. Morton, and her brother, Obadiah Morton.
It stipulates that her slave, Lucy, and Lucy's children, Mary and Lucy, are to be
sold to Captain Henry F. Watkins, if a proper price can be obtained, so that Lucy
will be near her husband, or to some good master in the neighborhood of her husband.
It mentions her niece, Adelaide Morton, daughter of her brother, Obadiah; nephews,
John Archer Morton and Thomas L. Morton, sons of brother Obadiah (both under age),
the money she leaves them to be applied to the education of these two boys. She
leaves a bequest to her niece, Judith Biglow; to Anne Hughes, granddaughter of her
brother Obadiah; and to her niece, Annie S. Rice.
In the sale of her negroes, they are not to be exposed to sale at public auc-
tion, but to be sold to good masters. "In the sale of my negroes, my executor is
to consult the comfort and welfare of the negroes, by selling them to good masters.
He shall by no means expose them at public auction; and moreover, he shall be
allowed to grant such credit on their prices as he may think proper, in order more
effectually to accomplish the purpose of accommodating the negroes with good masters
and comfortable homes."
Her executor was W. S. Morton, her nephew.
Will made March 22, 1834, proved in court June 16, 1834.
