THE BUSHNELL FAMILY

Family genealogies on the Bushnells are to be found at the National D.A.R.
Library and at the Library of Congress. The one at the Library of Congress goes
into great detail. The Barstow and Bushnell families were very confusing to me
for a time, as they married into each other's families several times, and the names
were often repeated in different branches and generations, but I was able to esta-
blish our line. The Bushnell book in the D.A.R. Library is a beautiful one, with
many Coats of Arms in color. They claim descent from William the Conqueror, King
Henry, some Russian and Scottish Kings, and several others! The motto is: Les
Droits ou la Mort. I. FRANCIS BUSHNELL b. 1646 in England, m. Rebecca Holmes in England. His five
sons came to America in 1635 and Francis and his wife followed them in 1638.
They went to the New Haven Colony and settled at Guilford, Conn., in 1639. II. RICHARD BUSHNELL b. Apr. 20, 1626/7, m. Mary Marvin, daughter of Mathew and
Elizabeth Marvin. He came to America with his brothers when he was only
12 or 13 years old. (V.M.B. If he came over in 1635, he would have been
only nine years old, if the birthdate is correct.) He and his wife lived
at Salem, Mass., and later at Guilford, Conn. III. JOSEPH BUSHNELL b. May 2, 1651, in Saybrook, Conn., m. Mary Leffingwell
Nov. 28, 1683. They were very prosperous. He died in Norwich Dec. 23, 1717. IV. REBECCA BUSHNELL b. Mar. 7, 1688, m. Job Barstow Mar. 2, 1718/19. She had a
brother named Jonathon, who married Abigail Hyde, which added to my confu-
sion in establishing this line. At least it rhymes with our Abigail Pride! Top
The LEFFINGWELL Family I. THOMAS LEFFINGWELL b. 1622. He was a native of Croxhall, England. Thomas
came to Saybrook, Conn., in 1637. He was a founder and the first settler
of Norwich, Conn., where he was one of the first two Deputies and a Lieute-
nant who led a group out in search of marauding Indians. He was acquainted
with Uncas. He married Mrs. Mary White who died in 1710. Thomas died in
1714. Issues: Rachel b. 1648, Thomas b. 1649, Jonathon b. 1650, Joseph b.
1652, Mary b. 1654, Nathaniel b. Dec. 11, 1656. It seems that all of the
daughters married either Bushnells or Tracys, and Thomas married Mary
Bushnell. II. MARY LEFFINGWELL, b. 1654, m. Joseph Bushnell in 1673. Top
