THE KINGSBURY FAMILY
(Abigail Kingsbury m. Abner Pride)
I. HENRY KINGSBURY
He was the grandson of James Kingsbury of Boxford, England. His family is
traced to John de Kingsbury 1369-1414 in the Kingsbury Genealogy. It states
that he lived near the Winthrop who became Governor of Massachusetts. In
1618 he was married to Margaret Alabaster. "Married, Henerie Kingsbury and
Margaret Alabaster the 18th. of May, 1618." (Parish Record, Assignton,
Eng.) Henry and Margaret and several children sailed with Winthrop's fleet
in 1630. The Kingsburys were on the TALBOT and Winthrop on the ARBELLA.
Winthrop mentioned in a letter to his wife, written on the ARBELLA: "Henry
Kingsbury has a child or two in the TALBOT sick with measles, but like to do
well." The children must have died. They were James, b. 1633, and Isiah,
b. 1624. There is no further record of them. In 1638 he was at Ipswich and
also at Dedham, Mass. He helped organize the Society of Contentment. (Civil
Affairs) He was one of the Founders and Proprietors of Dedham, Mass. He
died at Haverhill, Mass.
II. LT. JOSEPH KINGSBURY of Haverhill, Mass.
He took the oath of allegiance Nov 28, 1677. April 2, 1679, he was married
to Love Ayer, also of Haverhill. 1702 - He was a selectman, constable.
Joseph was a "viewer of fences", and a surveyor. June 14, 1708, he moved to
Norwich, Conn. He was a Deacon of the Church at Norwich West Farms. April
24, 1735, he died at Norwich.
III. JOSEPH KINGSBURY, JR., of Haverhill and Norwich West Farms was born June 22,
1682. Feb. 5, 1705, he married Ruth Ayer Denison of Ipswich. In 1708 they
moved to Norwich West Farms, Conn., with Joseph's parents. Joseph was a
Deacon, was a member of the Trainband, and was considered one "of the 8
pillars of the church". 1729 he was made a Lieutenant, 1748 he became a
Captain and 1732-42 was Deputy to the General Assembly.
He died Dec. 1, 1757. He willed to his "Loving and Faithful wife, Ruth,
and son Daniel, land in Norwich." The graves of most of these Kingsburys
and their wives are in the Franklin Burying Ground, Franklin, Conn.
Pictures of the tombstones are in the Kingsbury genealogy at the D.A.R.
Library, Washington, D.C.
IV. DANIEL KINGSBURY b. 1726 at Norwich West Farms,
m. Abigail Barstow Jan. 19, 1754. (Some of these dates differ in Virkus,
but I think the ones obtained from the tombstones would be the most accu-
rate.) 1751 - Society Clerk. He was a Selectman. Daniel died Sept. 17,
1760. He was only 36 years old. Tombstone Inscription: He was one of
RAR GENIUS and Posesed of all Those amiable virtues which unite in ye true
Christian. Best Husband, Tender Parent, Sure Friend and Kindest Neighbor.
